I lead a charmed life
I have settled quickly into my life in La Ceiba, and I love it more than I ever thought myself capable. I am taking Spanish classes during the day, which are going surprisingly well. I am learning more and more every day, which is great because most of my coworkers speak little to no English. Yup, that's right, I am working in the aforementioned Expatriates Bar and Grill, and I have never been so well taken care of in my life. The owners have provided me with an apartment, free meals whenever I need them, a ride to and from town (my apartment is a little ways out, in the nicest neighborhood in the city), and all of the little things that I have mentioned needing for the apartment. If I didn't have things to do in California, I might NEVER leave (don't worry dad, I will come home... eventually). Work is going well, the restaurant gets an interesting mix of clientele , both English and Spanish speaking, and I make much more than I need for a day. Don't ask me to do the math, because it would be unnecessarily depressing, but suffice to say that I definately bring in more than I need for living (because I have no overhead). I am leaving on Tuesday to meet my mom in Costa Rica, so I have to be responsible for my own acquisition of Spanish next week, but I am so excited about seeing my mom and seeing Costa Rica, that anything else is golden.
Did I mention that I have an apartment? It is not anything swanky, but it has hot water (a LUXURY here) one bedroom, one bathroom, and it is all mine. I don't have to share it with anyone, I don't have to clean it (we have a lady that comes once a week- are you serious???), and, best of all, I don't have to put all of my stuff back into my pack until it is time to head to the airport for my return trip to Cali.
So, good friends, things are going swimmingly here. Don't worry about me. As my friend Dan says, what could be wrong with me? The sun too hot? The margaritas too cold? The beaches too blazingly white? And yes, I suffer from all three every weekend on Utila. I will post some pics of work and the apartment next time I can get my camera, my computer, and the wireless internet all in the same place. Much love from me to all of you. More to come. Until then,
Jen
